Te Popo Gardens is one of Taranaki and New Zealand's premier gardens.

In February 2005 The New Zealand Gardens Trust assessed this garden as a Garden of National Significance.

We welcome visitors to our garden when we are home. Please phone to make sure we are here. (06 762 8775). We are open daily during the Taranaki Rhododendron and Garden Festival commencing late October for 10 days.

Six acres of woodland and perennial gardens, with extensive lawns, surround the homestead. Winter's tracery of branches gives way to carpets of bluebells, thousands of bulbs, hostas, flowering prunus, clematis and wisteria. Summer perennials, roses and shrubs lead into  autumn colour. Te Popo has a fine collection of deciduous and coniferous trees.     Innovative landscaping has blended the various elements and merged them seamlessly into the rain forest enclosing the garden. Features include: many ponds; a waterfall that descends deep into a fern gully; an unusual Australian garden; a comprehensive plant collection suited to this difficult environment; and great bird life.

A 30m suspension bridge links the Homestead Garden with Pepper's Domain (8 acres) - a developing woodland of 400 ornamental trees. Marked trails lead beyond into magnificent rain forest, plantation timbers and fascinating streams for the intrepid explorer. Tracks and steps provide access to another world within the 17m deep gorges - narrow, sheer sides covered in deep mosses, lichens and ferns and pristine cool temperate rainforest, smooth grey stone, clear tumbling waters, filtered light, birdsong and, at night, glow-worms.

Te Popo is a Special Place, famous for its birds. This was the former home and inspiration of internationally renowned bird artist, Janet Marshall, and artisan, Graeme Marshall. Visit Janet's own website and see some of her ongoing work.    http://www.janetemarshall.co.nz
